Cultural Facts

This package will allow you to visit the following places:

  • Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun): Considered the nerve center of the Inca empire (Tahuantinsuyo) and its most important temple, dedicated primarily to the sun god (Inti). Its finely worked walls were, according to chronicles, covered with sheets of gold. It was also an astronomical observatory and the origin point of the Ceque system (sacred imaginary lines connecting Cusco with huacas throughout the empire). The superposition of the Santo Domingo Convent on its foundations is a clear example of cultural syncretism and colonial domination.
  • Sacsayhuamán: More than a fortress, it is believed to have been a ceremonial complex of great importance. Its imposing zigzag walls, built with polygonal stones weighing up to 125 tons perfectly fitted together (without mortar), demonstrate extraordinary engineering and labor organization. It was the scene of the fierce battle between Manco Inca’s Incas and the Spanish conquerors in 1536. Today, it is the main stage for the Inti Raymi festival every winter solstice.
  • Qenqo: Its Quechua name means “labyrinth.” This site is a large limestone rock formation carved with complex patterns, including a sacrificial altar, zigzag channels (possibly for libations of chicha or blood), and underground galleries. It is interpreted as a ceremonial center dedicated to rituals related to death, mummification, and astronomical observation.
  • Pukapukara: Means “Red Fortress” in Quechua, likely due to the color of its stones at sunset. It functioned as a military checkpoint (tambo) and administrative center on the road to Antisuyo (the Inca jungle), protecting access to Cusco.
  • Tambomachay: Known as the “Inca Baths,” this site stands out for its impeccable hydraulic engineering, featuring a series of aqueducts, channels, and artificial waterfalls that flow constantly. It was dedicated to the worship of water (Unu), a fundamental element in the Andean worldview, and possibly functioned as a place of ritual purification for the Inca elite.
  • Machu Picchu: Built in the 15th century under the rule of Inca Pachacutec, this citadel is an icon of Inca architecture and engineering, perfectly integrated into the mountainous landscape. Although its exact function is still debated (royal residence, religious center, observatory?), its complex urban planning, agricultural sectors (terraces), and religious sectors (Temple of the Sun, Intihuatana, Temple of the Three Windows) evidence its importance. It was abandoned before the arrival of the Spanish and academically rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, although previously known by locals.
  • Humantay Lagoon: Beyond its scenic beauty, this glacial lagoon holds deep cultural significance. It is located at the foot of Apu Humantay (sacred mountain). In the Andean worldview, Apus are protective spirits and sources of life. It is believed that the waters of Humantay are a sacred gift from the Apu, essential for the fertility of the land and the subsistence of local communities (linked to Apu Salkantay, one of the most important in the region). The offerings and respect shown to the place reflect this spiritual connection.
  • Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca): Its spectacular coloring is due to the oxidation of various minerals (red clays, mudstones, sandstones, etc.) in sedimentary layers formed over millions of years. It is located near Apu Ausangate, one of the highest and most sacred mountains in Peru, considered a powerful protective spirit, giver of life and water, and associated with the fertility of livestock (especially alpacas and llamas). Visiting Vinicunca allows appreciation not only of a unique geological phenomenon but also the relevance of the Apus in current Andean culture.
